Title: Integrated medical care for patients with a penetrating obturating brain disease
Abstract: When measured by DALY, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death and disability in patients over 60. 20% of COPD patients are thought to have severe or very severe COPD (FEV1 equal to or less than 50% and 30% of expected value, respectively). Advanced COPD typically results in physical and mental decline; patients frequently cope poorly with the issues brought on by the disease and other comorbidities. Increased medical care costs, further deterioration of the patient’s condition, increased risk of COPD exacerbations, and ultimately increased risk of death are the results of this. The way that medical care is currently organized for those patients does not adequately support their social and physical well-being. However, it appears that implementing the integrated strategy suggested by the World Health Organization could help patients with advanced COPD. Over the past few years, hospices and stationary palliative care units in Poland have offered this type of care to patients with advanced cancer. Incorporating general practitioners’ and specialized nurses’ actions as well as providing access to specialists’ consultations based on each patient’s unique needs should be made easier by this experience. Additionally, it should permit extensive collaboration with auxiliary staff, including social workers, medical assistants, volunteers, psychologists, and clergymen (especially in the terminal phase of the disease).
