Description
Title: Infection risk and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Abstract: The risk of infections in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the main focus of this review article (COPD). There have been numerous studies over the years describing the risk of pulmonary infections in COPD patients, but very few have concentrated on the risk of infection outside the lungs. The risk of respiratory tract infection rises along with the severity of COPD. Both the colonization of the respiratory tract with bacteria and the increased risk of infection with new strains of bacteria causing acute exacerbations are most likely caused by the impairment of the innate immune system. Additionally, patients with COPD are more likely to develop lung infections like pneumonia, lung abscess, and empyema than healthy individuals. It appears that COPD patients do not appear to be at an increased risk of infection when compared to subjects who do not have COPD in terms of extrapulmonary infections. Conclusion: While infections outside of the respiratory system are not significantly linked to COPD, they are significantly linked to an increased risk of different respiratory tract infections.
