Title: Impact Features on Muscovite Mica Caused by Single Fast Ions of Different Charge States
Abstract: On muscovite mica, individual fast, heavy ions caused surface modifications that were subject to the influence of the charge state q. A variety of irradiation geometries and 593 MeV 197Auq+ beams with well-defined initial charge states were employed over a sizable range of values (30 to 51). The impact features at normal incidence are &20 nm-diameter rounded protrusions (hillocks). Along with the hillocks, craters and long tails (up to 350 nm long) extending in the direction of ion penetration are created at grazing angles. It is demonstrated that the projectiles’ initial charge state has a significant impact on the impact features at normal incidence. As the ion approaches the equilibrium charge state nearer the surface, this dependence becomes very weak. The volume of the hillock scales with q3.30.6 at normal ion incidence. As a weak dependence of the diameter was found, this dependence is primarily caused by the rise in hillock height.
