Description

Title: How disrupted circadian rhythms, the time of day, and sex affect cardiovascular health is discussed in the book Clocks, Rhythms, Sex, and Hearts.

Abstract: Ischemic heart disease is responsible for 16% of all deaths worldwide and is the leading cause of death in the United States. The primary focus of treatment for these conditions has frequently been on modifiable risk factors like diet and exercise. The development of these diseases may, however, be influenced by environmental factors that interfere with physiological rhythms, as well as by factors that raise other risk factors that are typically linked to cardiovascular disease. The disruption of endogenous circadian rhythms by nighttime light exposure, transmeridian travel, and social jet lag affects carefully timed bodily functions and increases the risk of disease and injury. The complexities of how seemingly unimportant environmental and social factors have dramatic effects on mammalian physiology and behavior are starting to come to light through research into how disrupted circadian rhythms affect physiology and behavior. Many questions in this area are still unanswered despite the recent attention being paid to the significance of circadian rhythms and how disturbed circadian rhythms contribute to cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, neither the time of day nor sex as a biological variable have been consistently and thoroughly considered in earlier research on the relationship between disruption of the circadian rhythm and cardiovascular disease. With a focus on the cardiovascular system, its rhythms, and the pathology connected to their disruption, we will first discuss biological rhythms and the master temporal regulator that regulates these rhythms in this review. We will also emphasize the significance of the time of day as a variable that directly affects outcomes in controlled studies, as well as how temporal data will inform clinical practice and influence personalized medicine. We will discuss the data that show there are gender differences in cardiovascular function and recovery from injury, and we will emphasize the importance of consistently including both sexes in studies that seek to better understand cardiovascular function.
