Title: Hospitalized Patients with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia: Effect of Age on Results
Abstract: Background. There isn’t much information in the published literature about how age affects outcomes for HHT (hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia) patients who are hospitalized. Methods. Data on all HHT patient hospital discharges from 2000 to 2012 were gathered using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS). Researchers looked into the relationships between admission age and outcomes and complications associated with HHT. Results. From 2000 to 2012, 10293 hospitalizations of HHT patients were included. 77% of all admissions were made by patients over 50, with 30% of those being made by patients between the ages of 51 and 65. The most frequent complications (62.7%, n = 6455 hospitalizations) were related to bleeding, followed by cardiovascular (41%, n = 4216), neurological (12.4%, n = 1276), and hepatobiliary (6.4%, n = 660) issues. 83% of bleeding events, 90% of cardiovascular events, 58% of neurologic events, and 81% of hepatobiliary events occurred in patients over the age of 50. The majority (83%) of medical and surgical procedures were carried out on people who were older than 50. Death rates were also higher in older patients. Conclusion. Hospitalization rates, complications, and outcomes among HHTpatients in the United States are significantly negatively impacted by aging. Patients over 50 years old bear the bulk of this disease’s burden, with the exception of neurologic complications.
