Title: High-Harmonic Generation for Attosecond Ultraviolet and X-Ray Pulses Using Few-Cycle Infrared Pulse Evolving in FEL Oscillators
Abstract: Free-electron laser (FEL) oscillators’ ability to produce a few-cycle optical pulses has been experimentally proven in FEL facilities based on both normal-conducting and superconducting linear accelerators. The few-cycle FEL lasing can be explained in the context of superradiance, cooperative emission from self-bunched systems, according to analytical and numerical studies. We review historical observations of superradiance FEL experiments in short-pulse FEL oscillators in the current paper with a focus on the generation of few-cycle FEL pulses. We also discuss the application of the few-cycle FEL pulses to the FEL-HHG scheme, which makes use of infrared FEL pulses to drive high-harmonic generation (HHG) from gas and solid targets. With HHG driven by solid-state lasers, it is challenging to explore ultrafast science with attosecond ultraviolet and X-ray pulses with an MHz repetition rate. To create technologies for the FEL-HHG and carry out a FEL-HHG proof-of-concept experiment, a research program has been started.
