Title: H. pylori and Iron Deficiency May Not Be Related Results of Normal Gastrointestinal Tract Endoscopy in Patients with Anemia
Abstract: Background. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between H. pylori and iron deficiency anemia in patients whose gastrointestinal tract endoscopy results were normal. Materials and procedures This retrospective study included 117 male patients with normal gastrointestinal tract endoscopy results. There were 69 and 48 patients in the study and control groups, respectively, who had and did not have iron deficiency anemia. We calculated and compared the prevalence of H. pylori, the number of RBCs, the levels of HGB, HTC, MCV, iron, and ferritin. Results. Regarding the prevalence of H. pylori, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (65.2% versus 64.6%, P = 0.896). Additionally, patients in the study group had lower levels of RBCs, HGB, HTC, MCV, iron, and ferritin than patients in the control group (P 0.05). Last but not least, there was no correlation between H. pylori and iron deficiency anemia (OR 1.02, Cl 95% 0.47-2.22, and P = 0.943). Conclusion. In male patients with normal gastrointestinal tract endoscopy findings, H. pylori is not related to iron deficiency anemia.
