Title: Greek Children’s Immune Thrombocytopenia Prognostic Factors: A Retrospective Single-Centered Analysis
Abstract: Children’s immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) can take many different forms and is classified into three categories based on how long it has been present: newly diagnosed (3 months), persistent (3–12), and chronic (>12). Numerous studies have assessed the prognostic variables for the disease’s progression, but comparable works have not yet been carried out in Greece. Our goal was to find prognostic indicators for the three forms of the disease in 57 Greek kids over the course of 13 years. Age, gender, previous infection, type of bleeding, length of symptoms, platelets at diagnosis, course of the disease, and immunological markers were all noted. Four persistent, 14 chronic, and 39 newly diagnosed pediatric illnesses were present. Compared to newly diagnosed/persistent groups, children with chronic ITP were more likely to be older than 10 years old (p = 0.015), have gradual disease onset (p = 0.001), have platelets > 10 109/L (p = 0.01), and have impaired immunological markers (p 0.003). Majority of the newly diagnosed/persistent group had recent history of infection (p = 0.013). None of the kids showed significant spontaneous bleeding. Conclusion. The chronic form of ITP is characterized by various predictive parameters that can be used in clinical practice, despite the fact that ITP in children typically has a self-limited course with sporadic serious bleeding complications.
