Title: Financial Inclusion and the Performance of Banking Sector in Palestine
Abstract: Despite evidence demonstrating the social and economic value of financial inclusion (FI), the connection between FI and bank profitability remains unclear. In this study, the association between financial inclusion and the performance of banks in Palestine was evaluated using dynamic panel analysis applied to a sample of 11 banks and two econometric models representing profitability indicators over a nine-year period (2012–2020). The generalized method of moments estimator was employed in addition to linear regression models. Access to financial services (such as the number of automated teller machines (ATMs) and bank branches), service delivery (including the average cost to maintain a checking account), and the quality of the products were found to increase the profitability of banks. Nevertheless, POS terminals have no effect on profitability. In addition, financial service utilization reflected in bank account numbers and credit to small and medium-sized businesses do not affect bank profitability, and among bank-specific variables, nonperforming loan ratios, cost-to-income ratios, and liquidity were identified as the primary drivers of profitability. Financial institutions must be a top priority for policymakers in Palestine, who must adopt regulations that encourage lending to financial institutions.
