Title: Examining the coordination of action in student writing during simulated nursing handoffs
Abstract: Students work together to provide care for a simulated patient within the confines of a certain scenario while participating in clinical nursing simulations. These simulations are used to teach students about teamwork and collaboration. A patient handoff refers to the process whereby one group of students transfers the responsibility of care for a patient to another group of students. It requires engagement from each and every one of the kids engaged. During this part of the procedure, students who have completed the program and graduated are responsible for passing on helpful knowledge to students who are just beginning their studies in the program. The nurse handoff is a crucial communication event in the medical industry that is mediated by a number of different actors and texts. Given that it takes place during the handoff from one nurse to the next, this particular instant may be fraught with danger. This article investigates how two student-designed texts, a collaborative patient chart and individual notes, are utilized during the handoff by drawing on observations and video recordings of 52 simulation handoffs that took place in the United States. The observations and recordings were made in the United States. These materials include a patient chart that was created collaboratively as well as individual notes. The United States of America served as the location for both the investigations and the recording sessions. In addition, I take into consideration the development, throughout the course of the academic year, of the student nurses’ handoff speech and writing as a direct outcome of the student nurses’ growing bodies of nursing knowledge. This essay makes a contribution to the ongoing research on professional writing pedagogy and the nursing scholarship on the handoff by concentrating on the textual mediation of the simulated nursing handoff. The concept of handoff is central to each of these subfields of research.
