Description
Title: Evaluation of Electron Impact Excitation of S III
Abstract: Tayal et al. recently reported results for energy levels, radiative rates (A-values), and effective collision strengths (U) for transitions among the 198 levels of Si-like S III in a paper (Astrophys. J. Suppl. 2019, 242, 9). They used the B-spline R-matrix (BSR) code for U and the multi-configuration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) code for energy levels and A-values in their calculations. For energy levels and A-values, their reported results seem to be accurate, but not for U. We show that their reported results for U are underestimated by up to a factor of two at all temperatures, especially for the allowed transitions, but also for some forbidden ones, through our independent calculations using the flexible atomic code (FAC). Additionally, the U results’ behavior for transitions involving the higher levels is incorrect.
