Description
Title: Epidemiology in the Philippines
Abstract: Currently, lung cancer is the fifth most common cancer in women and the most common neoplasm in men. Only breast cancer is diagnosed more frequently in women in developed nations. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in both men and women around the world. Lung cancer is the cause of 29% of cancer deaths and 21% of cases of cancer in men in Europe. Since the beginning of the twentieth century until 1990–1994 there has been a sharp increase in the incidence of lung cancer. Recently, the incidence in men has decreased, but it is still rising in women, particularly young women. Additionally, variations in the frequency of different lung cancer histological subtypes are seen. The prognosis is still poor, and long-term survival almost did not change despite numerous clinical trials, contemporary diagnostic methods, and improved supportive care. Lung cancer was more common in men in Poland in 2002 (81.9/100 000) than in women (22.2/100 000). One-year and five-year survival times are among the shortest in Europe for both sexes.
