Title: Emerging Functions of Vitamin D and Related Molecules in Pathways Associated with Thrombosis Pathogenesis

Abstract: In addition to being crucial for calcium and bone metabolism, vitamin D also regulates a number of biological responses to act as a mediator of numerous non-calcemic effects. There are two main types of vitamin D: vitamin D2, also called ergocalciferol, and vitamin D3, also called cholecalciferol. Both of these forms attach to a protein that transports vitamin D to all important target organs, where they act as a natural ligand for vitamin D receptors to enable their biological functions. Clinical studies linking vitamin D deficiency to an increase in thrombotic episodes suggest that vitamin D and the molecule it is associated with play a role in the control of thrombosis-related pathways. The development and spread of a blood clot, or thrombus, is thrombosis. Myocardial infarction, stroke, ischemia, and venous thromboembolism are just a few of the serious complications that can result from it occurring in either the arterial or venous systems. A number of genes involved in the control of cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis are directly or indirectly regulated by vitamin D. These are all potential processes with bearing on thrombotic disorders. Thus, this review focused on the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of vitamin D on thrombosis-related pathways like the hemostatic process, inflammatory pathway, and endothelial cell activation.
