Title: Effect of Plant Bioactive Compound Supplementation on the Metabolic and Inflammatory Status in Transition Dairy Cows
Abstract: (1) Background: In this study, the health and inflammatory status of dairy cows during calving were assessed in relation to a plant bioactive (Phyto Ax’Cell, Phytosynthese, Mozac, France). (2)Methods: A control group (CON, n = 23) and a Phyto Ax’Cell group (PAC, n = 23) were randomly assigned to 46 Holstein crossbred cows. From 15 days before delivery to 7 days after delivery, PAC received Phyto Ax’Cell at a dose of 25 g/cow/day. In order to assess the energy metabolism and inflammatory status, blood analyses were carried out every week from D-7 to D14. Rectal temperature was also measured every day within 14 days of calving day (D0). (3) Findings: At D7 (0.55 vs. 0.79mg/mL; p 0.05) and D14 (0.44 vs. 0.66 mg/mL; p 0.05), PAC demonstrated lower serumhaptoglobin levels. On D7, CON had significantly more circulating granulocytes and white blood cells (p 0.05). During the first two weeks postpartum, fewer cows from PAC displayed hyperthermia (39 C) (7%, p 0.05). Under the supplementation of plant bioactives, energy metabolism—which was measured by the NEFA/cholesterol ratio—improved (0.21 vs. 0.36 at D0, p 0.1; 0.19 and 0.15 vs. 0.36 and 0.32, respectively, at D+7 and D+14, p 0.05). (4) Verdicts: The findings imply that the anti-inflammatory plant bioactive compound with Brazilian green propolis given during calving had a positive impact on dairy cows’ levels of energy and inflammation.
