Title: Dylematy for radical oncologic chemotherapy for cancer patients on the rake of the pubis during old age
Abstract: 42% of lung cancer fatalities in Poland in 2005 were caused by patients aged 70 and over. Although lung cancer among the elderly is becoming more common in Poland as it is in other developed nations, there are no established standards of care for this segment of the population. There aren’t any prospective, elderly-specific clinical trials for therapeutic interventions. Results from prospective trials involving senior citizens reveal comparable efficacy to that in a younger population at the cost of higher toxicity. The ability to generalize clinical trial findings to the entire elderly population may be constrained by selection bias. The basic treatment for limited-stage small cell lung cancer and curative methods of treatment (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy as adjuvant for non-small cell lung cancer) are discussed. We present some treatment options and adaptations of conventional approaches that are especially promising for elderly patients. These include VADS surgery, stereotactic radiotherapy, and abbreviated treatment for SCLC.
