Title: Does the disease start in the gut? An association between osteoarthritis and gut microbiota

Abstract: Some claim that the gut is the origin of all diseases. It’s interesting to note that this idea is actually quite old, having been put forth nearly 2500 years ago by the Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and human health are now understood very differently than they were in the past thanks to ongoing advances in modern medicine. Although the gut microbiota (GMB) has established itself as a crucial element of human health under normal metabolic circumstances, there is now also a clear connection between the GMB’s composition and function and the onset of many diseases, particularly those of the musculoskeletal type. The symbiotic microbes that live in the gastrointestinal tract are extremely sensitive to biochemical stimuli, and depending on the nature of these biological signals, they may react in a variety of ways. The balance between the various species of gut microbes can be enhanced or disrupted by a number of factors, including nutrition and physical modification. In fact, a diet high in fat can lead to dysbiosis, which reduces the amount of bacterial defenses and jeopardizes the integrity of the GIT epithelial barrier. Increased levels of toxic metabolites, particularly the pro-inflammatory cytokines found in osteoarthritis (OA), are then released into the circulatory system as a result of pathogenic microbe overgrowth. This promotes inflammation and the start of numerous disease processes throughout the body. Even though OA and GMB perturbations have been linked in numerous studies, more research is still required.
