Description

Title: Does gender diversity and corporate governance affect firm performance (ROE)? Jordanian empirical evidence

Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to investigate how corporate governance structure and managerial/board gender diversity affected firm performance in the Jordanian business environment, which is a developing economy with a different business environment than developed economies. The current research concentrates on the distinct environment of an emerging economy (i.e., Jordan). From 2018 to 2020, information was gathered from non-financial companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange. The random-effects estimator, which was thought to be the most appropriate for this study, was used for data analysis. The findings show that the return on equity, a measure of corporate performance, had a positive but negligible impact on female representation on the boards of executives of Jordanian companies, proving that this variable has no bearing on the success of Jordanian businesses. Although the moderating effect of corporate governance structure had no impact on the relationship between CEO duality, institution ownership, government ownership, independent directors, and firm performance, both family ownership and board size had negative significant effects on performance. The results of the current study cannot be generalized to other industries or countries because it only focused on Jordanian industrial firms that were listed on ASE. It is advised that more research be conducted in order to broaden the study’s context and produce richer findings. The results can be used by managers to gain a better understanding of how governance structure impacts company performance. Regulators at the Jordan Securities Commission can also gain important knowledge about how well the country’s current laws regarding the importance of gender diversity and corporate governance are working. The current study adds to the body of knowledge on the impact of corporate governance structure and managerial gender diversity on performance. Additionally, this study aims to close the knowledge gap that exists in the context of Jordan, an emerging economy in the Arab world that is underrepresented in this field of study.
