Title: Densities, Capacities, and Scaling in the Saturation Regime: Loading a Paul Trap

Abstract: Here, we investigate the characteristics of the saturated steady state of a three-dimensional Paul trap loaded from a magneto-optic trap, which offers ideal conditions for the study of ion-neutral collisions. We focus on three assumptions that are frequently made in saturated steady-state situations: The maximum of Ns occurs at a loading rate of roughly 1 ion per rf cycle, (ii) the ion density is roughly constant, and (iii) the pseudopotential gives a good approximation for the number of ions, Ns, in the saturation regime. None of these presumptions turn out to be generally true, as we discover. We do, however, demonstrate where to locate practical dynamical regimes for ion-neutral collision experiments or how to rescale to the pseudo-potential predictions based on in-depth classical molecular dynamics simulations as a function of loading rate and trap control parameter. We also look into what happens to the electrons produced during the loading process and introduce insertion heating, a new heating mechanism that, in some trapping and loading regimes, may be just as effective as the rf-heating power of the trap, if not more so.
