Title: Czech Case Study: Economic and Political Effects of Mandatory Voting in Public Parliamentary Elections
Abstract: Researchers who study compulsory voting conduct their studies in nations where it is already legal. Contrarily, there aren’t many studies that examine ex ante analyses of the political and economic repercussions of voter behavior brought on by a novel aspect of public elections: compulsory voting. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to ascertain what reactions voters will have when voting becomes mandatory in the Czech Republic. The goal of this essay is to advance knowledge of the political and economic background of sanctions against nonvoters. The practical outcomes of this study include the estimation of this fine’s amount in the Czech Republic as well as an analysis of non-voters’ willingness to alter their behavior in response to it. We calculate the “abstention price” of a vote in this manner. The target group for the questionnaire survey, which was conducted in the Czech Republic in 2020 and collected the input data, was 807 respondents. In this study, basic statistical operations as well as binary and multinomial logistic regressions were used. The study’s findings indicate that mandatory voting has a negligible impact on turnout. Voting has become mandatory, which has altered the characteristics of the typical voter. Voters with less political knowledge and interest will participate in elections more frequently. The fine would be equal to about 6% of the average monthly income of nonvoters.
