Title: Cytometry-based assessment of basoflavone activity in the diagnosis of allergic disease
Abstract: The prevalence of allergic illnesses and anaphylactic reactions has been sharply rising for several years. In some instances, the standard skin-prick test for allergy diagnosis can cause potentially fatal reactions. These patients can benefit from using flow cytometry to detect allergen-induced basophil activation as a diagnostic tool for allergies. Recently, it has been shown that CD 63 and CD203c are specific basophil activation markers that are quickly up-regulated in patients with allergies. Although expensive and sophisticated, flow-cytometry techniques may be a good alternative for patients who are at risk for severe anaphylactic reactions or who have contradictory test results.
