Title: Cytomegalovirus, Human Immunodeficiency Viruses, Hepatitis C, and Hepatitis B Seroprevalence in Multitransfused Thalassemic Children in Upper Egypt
Abstract: Background. Children with thalassemia major who frequently receive blood transfusions run the risk of contracting infections from the transfusions (TTIs). This study’s objective was to determine the prevalence of the hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) in thalassemic children enrolled in the pediatrics departments of the Sohag and Minia Universities of Upper Egypt between May 2014 and May 2015. Methods. Using the Vitek Immunodiagnostic Assay System, serum samples were screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-HCV, anti-CMV, and anti-HIV type 1 and type 2. Results. Anti-HCV, HBsAg, anti-CMV, anti-type 1 and type 2 HIV, and anti-HBsAg frequencies were found to be 37.11%, 4.12%, 4.12%, 0.00%, and 0.00%, respectively. Seropositivity for anti-HCV, anti-HBsAg, and anti-CMV increased with patient age, disease duration, serum ferritin level (ng/mL), and liver enzymes (U/L), but not significantly (P > 0.05) with gender, blood transfusion frequency, or the presence of splenectomy. Conclusion. Among Egyptian children with major thalassemia, TTIs, particularly HCV, are very common. In order to decrease TTIs from blood donor units, it is crucial to implement measures to enhance blood transfusion screening, such as polymerase chain reaction.
