Title: Could Metformin Treatment Prevent Multiple Myeloma? Obesity as a Potential Risk Factor for Progression from Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance Progression into Multiple Myeloma
Abstract: Obesity is increasingly linked to the development of multiple myeloma from monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) (MM). Common etiopathogenesis mechanisms among obesity, MGUS, and MM include altered insulin axis and the effects of inflammatory cytokines. According to this connection, metformin may primarily inhibit these pathophysiological factors, making it an appealing treatment option for MGUS. Only a small number of epidemiological studies have concentrated on obesity as a risk factor for MGUS and MM, despite the potential clinical significance. This review discusses various biological pathways that metformin can modulate at the cellular level and their potential effects on the biology of MGUS and the development of MM.
