Title: CONSISTENT PER-PIXEL EXTRUSION MAPPING WITH SILHOUETTE
Abstract: Per-pixel extrusion mapping involves overlaying a polygon model with a virtual geometry that is stored in a texture without increasing its density. Extrusion mapping can be classified into four different categories: basic extrusion, outward extrusion, beveled extrusion, and chamfered extrusion. While the results of these various methods are satisfactory when applied to plane surfaces, when applied to curved surfaces, a silhouette is not visible at the edges of the extruded forms on the 3D surface geometry because the curvatures of the 3D meshes are not taken into consideration. In this paper, we present an improvement that combines per-pixel extrusion-mapping methods with a quadratic approximation computed at each vertex of a 3D mesh to correct the silhouette problem using curved ray-tracing.
