Title: Cancer Treatment with Liposomal Cytarabine: From Chemistry to Medicine
Abstract: The second leading cause of death in the world is cancer. Surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy are the main cancer treatment options. More recently, targeted therapy, gene therapy, and immunotherapy have become crucial components of the care for cancer patients. Chemotherapy has advanced significantly over the past few decades. A small amount of the drug can still reach the tumor cells, so drug administration is not always successful. In this situation, using an anti-cancer drug that has been encapsulated may be able to provide a solution. When compared to liposomal anthracyclines, liposomal cytarabine is a formulation with pronounced effectiveness in the treatment of lymphomatous meningitis and reduced cardiotoxicity. As a result, given that liposomal cytarabine has fewer cytotoxic side effects than the free formulation, its use for other diseases may be expanded in the future. This review discusses the chemistry, biology, and potential clinical applications of liposomal cytarabine.
