Description

Title: Cancer Labeling, Resection, and Treatment Using Fluorescent Anti-CEA Antibodies: A Review

Abstract: The difficulty in detecting and visualizing tumor margins in primary and metastatic disease is a significant impediment to the diagnosis and effective treatment of solid-tumor cancers. Fluorescence can improve the surgeon’s capacity for cancer detection and support cancer resection. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is expressed by a number of cancer types, including gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer. Near-infrared fluorescent dyes have been used to label CEA antibodies that have been developed. The use of CEA antibodies coupled to fluorescent probes for in vivo studies since 1990 was reviewed in this review article. 900 titles and abstracts were screened after searches were made in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Ninety-nine entries were fully reviewed after being flagged as possibly meeting inclusion or exclusion criteria. The review included forty articles, and it looked through the citations of those articles to find more entries. The final review included a total of 44 articles. In murine models as well as in humans, it has been demonstrated that fluorescent anti-CEA antibodies improve tumor detection and resection. The combined findings show that fluorescent-conjugated anti-CEA antibodies have significant potential to enhance cancer surgery and diagnosis. Anti-CEA fluorescent antibodies have also been used successfully for photoimmunotherapy treatment of cancer in a new technology.
