Description
Title: By using in situ green synthesis to create silver nanoparticles, washable antimicrobial cotton fabrics have been created, and their effectiveness against drug-resistant bacteria has been examined.
Abstract: Azadirachta indica leaf extract was used to reduce silver nitrate in situ, giving cotton fabrics an environmentally friendly and wash-durable silver nanoparticle treatment. By retreating the fabrics through mercerization and using hydrothermal conditions of 120 C temperature and 15 psi pressure for the in situ synthesis, the washability of the silver nanoparticles treatment on the cotton fabric was improved. Utilizing scanning electron microscopy, colorimetric analysis, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, the silver nanoparticle-treated fabrics were studied and characterized. Scanning electron micrographs of the treated fabrics revealed a dense and uniform silver nanoparticle coating. It was determined whether the silver nanoparticle-treated fabric was effective at preventing the growth of antibiotic-resistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. The antibacterial efficacy was found to be moderate against Klebsiella pneumoniae (20%) and Escherichia coli (10%), but highest against Bacillus licheniformis, showing 93.3% inhibition. The UV protection factor of the fabrics treated with silver nanoparticles was determined using the transmittance data from a UV spectrophotometer (290-400nm). All of the fabrics treated with silver nanoparticles demonstrated effective antimicrobial and UV protection properties. Additionally, the treatment’s resistance to repeated laundering was observed. In order to improve the wash durability of the multifunctional fabric, this paper contributes the first report on a novel green synthesis approach integrating the mercerization of cotton fabrics and in situ synthesis of nanoparticles under hydrothermal conditions.
