Title: Biological Interactions and Cancer: Awaiting the Perfect Storm
Abstract: According to epidemiological data, chronic inflammation brought on by a lingering bacterial infection is closely related to malignancies. More studies have recently offered experimental support for a bacterial factor’s etiological role in predisposing infected tissue to carcinoma. Healthy cells may sustain proliferative signaling, resist apoptotic signals, evade growth suppressors, enable replicative immortality, and induce angiogenesis when they accumulate genomic insults that cause DNA damage. This increases active invasion and metastasis. These cells also need to be able to deregulate cellular energetics and avoid being destroyed by the immune system. It is still unclear how bacterial infection causes mutations and enhances an inflammatory response or micro-environment that promotes tumor growth. This review highlights well-researched bacteria, their virulence factors, which are strongly linked to carcinoma, as well as the various mechanisms and pathways that may be carcinogenic.
