Title: Beta-Thalassemia Increases Microcytic Hypochromic Anemia Erythrocyte Catalase Activity Iron deficiency anemia and personality
Abstract: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and -thalassemia trait (BTT), in which oxidative stress (OxS) plays a crucial role, are the two most prevalent microcytic hypochromic anemias. Catalase is an essential antioxidant enzyme that causes cells to detoxify H2O2. Measurement of erythrocyte catalase activity (ECAT) in patients with IDA (10) or BTT (21), correlation with thalassemia mutation type (0 or +), and comparison with controls were the objectives of the study (67). In Tucum’an, Argentina, from September 2013 to June 2014, 98 people were examined. The following tests were run: total blood count, alkaline pH hemoglobin electrophoresis, HbA2, catalase, and iron status. By using real-time PCR, -thalassemic mutations were identified. ECAT’s normal range was 70,0-130,0 MU/L. In 14% (3/21) of BTT subjects and 40% (4/10) of IDA subjects, ECAT was higher. Between the normal and BTT groups, there was no significant difference (p = 0,245), but between the normal and IDA groups, the difference was found to be significant (p = 0,000). No significant difference (p = 0,359) was found between the 0 and + groups. In IDA and BTT, an altered ECAT was found. These findings will make it clearer how the catalase activity functions in these different types of anemia.
