Title: Bariatric surgery’s impact on metabolic disorders and underlying mechanisms
Abstract: With few effective treatments available, obesity is a serious public health issue that affects a large portion of the population. Obesity is closely linked to a number of comorbidities, including the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The prevalence of obesity and its associated comorbidities has been noted to be reduced by bariatric surgery, which can be administered in a variety of ways. The various bariatric procedures shorten the size of the stomach and produce a variety of new pathways for the body to metabolize food. Only a small amount of food is tolerated as a result, and the body mass index noticeably drops. In this review, the improvements of obesity and its comorbidities after bariatric surgery are discussed, along with the mechanisms underlying those improvements. In addition, improvements in endocrine function following bariatric surgery are discussed, including the function of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), fibroblast growth factors 19 and 21 (FGF-19, FGF-21), and pancreatic peptide YY (PYY). Finally, some bariatric surgery side effects are discussed, including osteoporosis, iron deficiency/anemia, diarrhea, and possible causes.
