Title: Atomic Data Inconsistencies and Suggestions for Fixing Them
Abstract: Atomic data are needed for a variety of parameters, including energy levels, radiative rates, and electron impact excitation rates, or alternatively, the effective collision strengths, in order to analyze and model a variety of plasmas (for example, astrophysical, laser-produced, and fusion plasmas). Despite the fact that not all elements are applicable to all types of plasmas, such data are desired for a wide variety of elements and their numerous ions. Calculations for all parameters are crucial because measurements of atomic data are typically restricted to just a few energy levels of some ions. The fact that there are frequently significant discrepancies between various calculations for virtually all parameters makes it challenging to use the data with confidence. Many of these inconsistencies (as well as potential solutions) were previously discussed (Fusion Sci. Technol. 2013, 63, 363). Since then, numerous additional anomalies have been discovered for almost all of these atomic parameters. In order to highlight the significant discrepancies, identify their potential causes, and offer some recommendations for how to avoid them, this paper revisits a variety of atomic parameters. By doing so, it will make atomic data more comparable, accurate, and reliable in the future.
