Title: Atomic Casimir-Polder Interaction with a Phase-Change Material Cavity Wall out of Thermal Equilibrium

Abstract: We take into account the out-of-thermal-equilibrium Casimir-Polder interaction between He, Na, Cs, and Rb atoms and a sapphire cavity wall covered in a vanadium dioxide film that transitions from being dielectric to metal with wall temperature. When the wall temperature is higher than the ambient temperature, numerical calculations of the Casimir-Polder force and its gradient as functions of atom-wall separation and wall temperature are performed. The outcomes are contrasted with those of an experiment measuring the gradient of the Casimir-Polder force between 87Rb atoms and a wall of silica glass that is not in thermal equilibrium. It is demonstrated that, in contrast to the case of a dielectric wall, the use of phase-change wall material significantly increases the force magnitude and particularly the force gradient.
