Abstract: It is not common practice to assess lung function in preschoolers to determine whether they have asthma. Spirometry can only be used in this age group with active cooperation because forced expiratory manoeuvres are necessary. An easy and non-invasive way to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of the respiratory system during tidal breathing is the forced oscillation technique (FOT). Young patients are treated with it, and little cooperation is required. It gives a group of patients whose respiratory systems we haven’t yet been able to objectively evaluate with the right diagnostic tools. FOT has been used more frequently recently as a result of the accessibility of new technical solutions, and it has the potential to be an important tool for diagnosing and monitoring treatment in preschoolers. This article discusses the potential clinical use of FOT for early childhood asthma diagnosis and management.
