Title: Applications in Surgery of Antimicrobial-Engineered Materials
Abstract: A significant issue that crosses nearly all surgical specialties is the infection of implants that have been surgically placed. Implant-associated infections have a negative impact on patients’ quality of life, increase mortality, morbidity, and cost the healthcare system more money. The consequences of this issue have led to extensive pre-clinical and clinical research on ways to reduce implant infection rates. More recently, there has been a lot of interest in antimicrobial strategies that alter or heal the implant directly. These methods consist of antibiotic-releasing implants, antibacterial nanostructured implant surfaces, and antibacterial implant coatings (antifouling substances, antibiotics, metal ions, and antimicrobial peptides). This review compiles these methods along with their clinical applications and results. In general, implant-specific interventions have been successful in reducing infections; however, the majority of these interventions are still in the preclinical or early clinical phases.
