Title: Apigenin’s Potential in the Treatment and Prevention of Cancer
Abstract: The leading cause of death in the world is cancer. Despite advancements in cancer treatment, the normal cells are killed by current treatment methods like chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy. Therefore, the main focus of current research is still developing cancer treatment methods that are more efficient and have fewer side effects. Due to their low side effects and demonstrated role in lowering resistance to cancer therapy, medicinal plants or their bioactive ingredients act as dynamic sources of drugs. Apigenin is a flavonoid derived from edible plants that has received significant scientific attention for its potential to improve health through the modulation of oxidative stress, inflammation, and other biological processes. Apigenin’s capacity to modulate a number of cell signaling pathways, such as the tumor suppressor gene, angiogenesis, apoptosis, cell cycle, inflammation, apoptosis, PI3K/AKT, NF-B, MAPK/ERK, and STAT3 pathways, further supports its anti-cancer potential. The main focus of the current review is on how apigenin may affect various cell signaling pathways to play a role in the development of various cancers. Additional research based on clinical trials is required to examine the function of apigenin in the treatment of cancer and to explain any potential mechanisms of action.
