Description

Title: Analysis of Young Graduate Underemployment: A South African Higher Education Institution’s Experience

Abstract: The last few years have seen significant changes in the labor markets. There are claims that employment and unemployment statistics are insufficient for comprehending the complexity of the labor markets. One aspect of the labor underutilization issue, the lack of jobs, has received the majority of attention in research. However, there is more to the labor market than just a lack of jobs, and many researchers think that underemployment is not a complete measurement of unused labor capacity. For this reason, the goal of this study was to find out whether underemployment exists based on the perspectives of recent graduates. In this context, young people were those who, according to South Africa’s official definition, were under the age of 35. In order to gather the necessary data from a South African university’s alumni database, the study used a primary data method that involved an online survey. The factors that caused or had an impact on underemployment status were identified using binary logistic regression in the study. The main findings showed that underemployment varied greatly by age, with younger graduates (20-29 years) more likely to be underemployed than their more mature counterparts (30–34 years), and non-White graduates more likely to experience underemployment than their counterparts. Important conclusions and recommendations from this study may be crucial in resolving the current employment mismatches in the South African graduate labor market. These findings have important policy implications.
