Title: An endorphin rush for new neurons? Possible Function of Endorphins in the Effects of Exercise on Adult Neurogenesis
Abstract: Exercise has numerous advantages for mental health and cognitive function, benefits that closely resemble improvements in hippocampal function. Many of these mental benefits of exercise have been linked to hippocampal neurogenesis. The precise mechanisms causing these effects are not well understood, though. Beta-endorphins, which are peripherally released during exercise, present an intriguing candidate for regulating increases in neurogenesis and the associated behavioral advantages of exercise. This review identifies reasons for further investigating beta-endorphin as a crucial mediator of hippocampal neurogenesis, despite the fact that they have historically been overlooked due to their peripheral release and status as peptide hormones. This covers potential pathways for beta-endorphin signaling into the hippocampus during exercise, the direct effects of beta-endorphin on cell proliferation and neurogenesis, and the behavioral implications of tinkering with endogenous opioid signaling. When taken as a whole, beta-endorphin appears to be a promising mechanism for comprehending the precise mechanisms by which exercise promotes adult neurogenesis in particular and brain health in general.
