Title: An analysis and literature review of the relationship between spinal implant osseointegration and the use of 3D printing
Abstract: To reduce the risks of complications and donor site morbidity when using autologous bone, interbody implants have been used increasingly for spinal fusion. The surgeon can choose the best interbody for each patient by considering the benefits and drawbacks of various implant designs. These interbody cages are designed to support the axial skeleton while encouraging the growth of bony tissue on their surface. The majority of interbody implants used today are bone-anchored metal or polyether ether ketone (PEEK) cages. graft integrated within. Although titanium alloy implants have been widely used, there are inherent problems due to the material’s significant difference in elasticity from bone. PEEK implants have a desirable surface area and the advantage of having an elasticity modulus that is more similar to bone. Unfortunately, these devices have a higher risk of subsidence when used clinically. With improved surface design for bony ingrowth and mechanical stability, 3D printed implants have recently entered the market. While there haven’t been many studies on clinical outcomes, preliminary findings show that 3D custom interbody devices have faster and more reliable fusion rates. The biology of osseointegration, the use of surface-coated implants, and the potential advantages of using 3D printed interbodies are all covered in this review.
