Description

Title: Advanced stages of nasopharyngeal cancer and soluble P-selectin are associated with peripheral monocyte count.

Abstract: Introduction. It is well known that inflammation, which is connected to thrombosis, plays a significant role in the development of cancer. Several biomarkers, including soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin), have the potential to predict cancer-related thrombosis. The purpose of this study was to look into the relationship between sP-selectin and monocyte count in various stages of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods. According to nodal and distant metastasis, 55 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were divided into three groups (group of stages I-IVA, IVB, and IVC). Routine peripheral blood analysis was used to calculate the monocyte count, and a commercial ELISA kit was used to measure the sP-selectin level. Results. When compared to group I-IVA, the monocyte count of the subjects in groups IVB and IVC was significantly higher (707/L versus 528/L, p = 0.022; 841/L versus 528/L, p = 0.005). In comparison to group I-IVA (59.5 ng/mL versus 41.97 ng/mL, p = 0.001) and group IVB (59.5 ng/mL versus 45.53 ng/mL, p = 0.007), group IVC had higher plasma levels of sP-selectin. There was a modest correlation between monocyte count and sPselectin in subjects with high monocyte counts (>665/L) (r = 0.436, p = 0.022). Conclusion. In comparison to earlier stages, nasopharyngeal carcinoma in advanced stages had higher levels of monocyte count and sP-selectin. sP-selectin and monocyte count were correlated, particularly in the high monocyte count subgroup.
