Title: Advanced Sensing Technologies and COVID-19 Biomarkers for Point-of-Care (POC) Diagnosis

Abstract: COVID-19, also referred to as SARS-CoV-2, is a new respiratory virus that is currently afflicting people. It is a single-strand positive-sense RNA virus at its genetic core. It is a beta-type coronavirus that differs from other coronaviruses in terms of structure and binding mechanism. Due to the small market for at-home detection, virus testing is still difficult. Viral, antigen, and antibody tests are the three main categories of biomarker detection tests available today. For testing viruses, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) continues to be the industry standard. However, limitations include results turnaround time and a lack of quantitative detection. The recent developments in COVID-19 detection that this manuscript focuses on have lower limits of detection and quicker response times than RT-PCR testing. With limits as low as 1 fg/mL in the Graphene Field Effect Transistor (FET) sensor, the improvements in sensing platforms have amplified the detection levels and provided real-time results for SARS-CoV-2 spike protein detection. Additionally, detection levels can reach a level of specificity and sensitivity comparable to PCR testing by utilizing multiple biomarkers. The widespread use of Point of Care (POC) diagnosis in COVID-19 detection depends on the proper biomarker selection in conjunction with nano sensing detection platforms.
