Title: Adult Malaria Parasites’ Haematological Profile Ghana’s Volta Regional Hospital visit

Abstract: Background. Due to its noticeable effects and alteration on the haematological parameters of infected individuals, malaria is known to cause severe health consequences. *This study evaluated the haematological profile of adult individuals infected with the malaria parasite. Methods. Utilizing historical data on cases of malaria positivity from January 2017 to March 15, 2019, a retrospective study was carried out. The information retrieved covered the demographics of the subjects, the number and type of malaria parasites, and the full blood count parameters. The study included a total of 236 subjects who tested positive for malaria. Results: The study found that females were more likely than males to have malaria parasite infections (69.07% versus 30.93%). In total, 87.3% of the study population had Plasmodium falciparum infection, as opposed to 12.7% who had Plasmodium malariae. The most prevalent hematopoietic abnormalities identified in this study in the infected participants were lymphopenia (56.78%), anemia (55.51%), thrombocytopenia (47.46%), eosinopenia (45.76%), neutropenia (29.24%), monocytosis (21.19%), and leucocytosis (17.37%). In comparison to P. malariae-infected subjects, the mean platelet count of P. falciparum-infected individuals decreased. With each unit increase in parasite density, the number of platelets decreased in a way that was statistically significant (P value 0.05). Conclusion. Malaria infection caused significant changes in haematological parameters in study participants, with anemia, thrombocytopenia, lymphopenia, monocytosis, and eosinopenia being the most significant indicators of infection, particularly with P. falciparum species.
