Title: Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time and Prothrombin Time Assessment in Hypertensive Patients Attending a Tertiary Hospital in Calabar, Nigeria

Abstract: Introduction. The effects of hypertension on haemostasis and the roles of blood coagulation products in the clinical development of hypertension have been established by a number of biomedical findings. Methods. This cross-sectional study compared normotensive and hypertensive patients at a tertiary hospital in Calabar to determine the effects of hypertension on prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). The PT and APTT of 42 hypertensive patients and 39 normotensive control subjects were examined using Quick one-stage methods. Results. In hypertensive patients, APTT positively correlated with both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (r = 0.3072, r = 0.4988; P 0.05). When compared to normotensive subjects, hypertensive patients had significantly higher DBP, SBP, PT, and APTT (P 0.05). In hypertensive patients, DBP had a negative correlation with illness duration (r = 0.3097; P 0.05) and a positive correlation with age in normotensive subjects (r = 0.3523; P 0.05). Conclusion. The findings suggested that PT and APTT measurements could be used as indices to assess hemostatic abnormalities in hypertensive patients and serve as a guide for antihypertensive therapy. However, it is advised to conduct D-dimer, platelet factors, and protein assays to gain a better understanding of hemostatic activities in hypertension.
