Title: ABO Blood Groups’ Relative Exposure to Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria in Ghana

Abstract: Erythrocyte polymorphisms, such as the ABO blood groups, have an impact on the clinical outcome of falciparum malaria in endemic areas. According to studies, the ABO blood group is related to P. falciparum malaria infection severity, susceptibility, and resistance. Falciparum malaria has been found to be highly contagious in people with blood group “A,” whereas blood group “O” is thought to offer protection from complicated cases. In the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, 293 young children under the age of six who had malaria provided us with samples for analysis. When compared to 40.9% of uncomplicated controls, it was found that groupOwas present in about 16.1% of complicated cases. Blood groups A and B had about a twofold higher risk of having complicated malaria than blood group O (A versus O, OR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.59-2.26, P 0.0001; B versus O, OR = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.57-2.23, P 0.0001). Participants from blood group O who had complex diseases had lower parasitaemia than those from the other blood groups (P 0.0001) As suggested, this may give people with blood group O an advantage over other groups in complicated malaria in terms of survival. In comparison to participants with uncomplicated disease, participants with complicated falciparum malaria tended to be younger and more anemic.
