Title: A Situation Analysis and Solutions by Punjabi Stakeholders on the Antimicrobial Usage and Resistance in the Dairy Chain
Abstract: Public health is seriously threatened by the increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in animal foods and the careless use of antibiotics in the dairy industry. The use of antibiotics in the Punjabi dairy industry was the subject of focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) with a strategic sample of four stakeholder groups (114 participants). In the years 2020 and 2021, KIIs and FGDs were conducted among chemists (n = 18), para-veterinarians (n = 28), and managers of dairy quality (n = 12). The risk practices currently in place in the fields that may encourage antimicrobial resistance are depicted through FGDs and qualitative interviews with different stakeholders. The results of the current study showed that the main risk factors for inappropriate antibiotic use in the dairy industry were widespread quackery (treatment practices carried out by unlicensed individuals without a recognized diploma or degree), self-treatment by farmers, the availability of antibiotics over-the-counter, a low veterinarian to animal ratio, and a lack of public awareness of the potential negative effects of antimicrobial resistance. The current study took a thorough approach that focused on the dairy industry’s stakeholders and their thoughts on prudent antimicrobial usage and antimicrobial resistance tailored to Punjab’s dairy farming. It is urgently necessary to advocate for policies that take into account the unique difficulties the dairy industry faces in order to strengthen antibiotic stewardship while also facilitating better access to veterinary services.
