Abstract: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have a wide range of uses in biomedical equipment. These alloys are well suited for use in medical devices like stents and filters due to their biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and ductility. The main use of SMAs in these implants is to provide superelasticity. These alloys can also be used for actuation; the best example of this is NiTi. SMA devices have been used as harnesses with a variety of actuation modes, including displacement control, force control, and compliance control. These two special qualities have allowed for new applications in the fields of neurosurgery, robot-assisted surgery, controlled assistive devices, and rehabilitation equipment. For the ankle, knee, and elbow, various categories of rehabilitation equipment are highlighted as passive and assisted exercises. To improve patient outcomes, the SMA actuator in these devices can be controlled by an EMG signal.
