Title: A Review of Acinetobacter baumannii’s Biofilm-Forming Virulence Characteristics and Emerging Therapies
Abstract: One of the most common nosocomial pathogens with a strong potential to develop antibiotic resistance is the Acinetobacter species. Where there is prolonged use of medical devices like CSF shunts, catheters, endotracheal tubes, and similar devices, it frequently results in infections. Acinetobacter (A) species (spp) come in a variety of strains, the majority of which are pathogenic to humans. However, A. baumannii is completely resistant to a number of clinically useful antibiotics. Their powerful capacity to produce biofilms is the key mechanism that makes them a multidrug-resistant strain. The microorganisms have plenty of opportunity to withstand the harsh environment and continue to cause chronic infections thanks to biofilms. Numerous physiological and virulence factors that are involved in the development and maintenance of biofilms have been identified by numerous studies. In this review, we further our understanding of this pathogen by talking about its taxonomy, pathogenesis, available therapies, rates of global antibiotic resistance, mechanisms of resistance to various classes of antibiotics, and potential therapeutics.
