Description

Title: A Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment of Antimicrobial Stewardship Education and Training in Indian Hospitals

Abstract: Background: To comprehend the function of human resources, education, and training (E&T), as well as infrastructure, in relation to antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in Indian healthcare organizations. Methods: A mixed method approach utilizing both qualitative and quantitative surveys and interviews was used. Key informants invited medical staff from 69 hospitals (public and private) to take part in an online survey and subsequent qualitative interviews. The key emerging themes from the interviews were identified using thematic analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the survey results. Results: The survey received 60 responses from medical staff members working at 51 hospitals. Semi-structured phone interviews with eight doctors were conducted. Of the respondents, 69% (27/39) received E&T on AMS while enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs. 88% (15/17) had not received any E&T during their employment or at induction. Three major areas of concern emerged from the qualitative interviews: (1) the need for government-level support of AMS activities; (2) the absence of AMS programs in hospitals; and (3) the lack of postgraduate E&T in AMS for staff. In conclusion, India does not currently have any formalized E&T for AMS. The sustainable design and implementation of customized E&T for hospital AMS in India depend heavily on stakeholder involvement.
