Title: A Critical Analysis of Ecological Imperialism in George Orwell’s Burmese Days
Abstract: Through his well-known book Burmese Days, Orwell provides some background for the impending ecological disaster on a worldwide scale. This book elucidates the many elements that led to the deterioration of the environment and provides solutions to these problems. In the book Burmese Days, a concrete illustration of ecological imperialism is provided in the form of a logging firm that is operated by a small European colony in Upper Burma. This book also reveals the apparent hypocrisy and double standards that were practiced by the British Empire in Upper Burma. These British colonial tactics were characterized by an underlying determination to evaluate imperialism honestly and to determine the extent of its influence on the environment. The objective of this essay is to investigate the ways in which ecological imperialism influences the characters in the book.
