Description

Title: A Case Study of Rural Sindh, Pakistan’s Socio-Economic Impact of the Interest-Free Community Investment Fund

Abstract: This study aims to assess how the Community Investment Fund (CIF) intervention has affected rural women’s socioeconomic circumstances. In the districts of Khairpur, Shikarpur, Kandhkot Kashmore, and Jacobabad in Sindh, Pakistan, CIF is a community-managed fund that aims to raise the standard of living for women by enabling them to engage in income-generating activities that will help them become more stable financially and self-reliant. The treatment group (beneficiaries) and control group were the two groups used in this study’s quasi-experimental design (non-beneficiaries). This study’s sample size, which included both the treatment and control groups, was 708 respondents. The results of the mean comparison show a significant difference in the socio-demographic variables (such as monthly income and consumption, saving amount, total asset value, asset purchased value, and household diet) and indicators of women empowerment between the treatment and control groups, indicating that CIF has led to women empowerment. The higher graduation of beneficiaries (treatment group) in light of the results of the poverty scorecard suggests that the CIF’s intervention also had a favorable effect on the beneficiaries it was intended to help. Particularly, the results show that, in terms of poverty score, 72% of beneficiaries (treatment group) have advanced from one lower band to a higher band as opposed to 59.4% of non-beneficiaries (control group). Furthermore, the results of the logistic regression analysis confirmed that beneficiaries’ participation in the CIF program gives them more power. With the help of this study, policymakers can make CIF even more efficient and long-lasting.
