Title: Attacking the Oxidative Stress Contributing to Endometriosis and Its Pain

Abstract: Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition that affects women and is characterized by infertility and persistent pelvic pain. With rising morbidity, this disorder is spreading more widely. Endometriosis’s etiology needs to be fully understood in order to improve treatment options. In this review, we will examine the biochemical mechanisms causing oxidative stress, how they relate to the pathophysiology of endometriosis, and possible remedies that specifically target these mechanisms. Endometriosis has been linked to increased levels of reactive oxygen species and oxidation products, decreased levels of antioxidants and detoxification enzymes, and dysregulated iron metabolism, according to a thorough review of prior studies. High levels of oxidative stress may play a role in endometriosis by contributing to inflammation, extracellular matrix degradation, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation. Neurogenic inflammation, a feed-forward mechanism involving macrophages, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and pain-inducing prostaglandins, and endometriosis have all been linked to pain. For the treatment of endometriosis, N-acetylcysteine, curcumin, melatonin, and combined vitamin C and E supplementation showed promising results, but more research is required before their use in this population.
