Title: A Natural Anthraquinone with Diverse Biotherapeutic Potential: Chrysophanol
Abstract: Chrysophanol is a special anthraquinone with both ecological and broad-spectrum therapeutic potential. It is the first polyketide whose organism-specific biosynthesis has been documented. The beneficial effects of chrysophanol on human health are demonstrated by the conventional Chinese and Korean medical systems. Chrysophanol is found throughout the world in both bacteria and eukaryotes, which has prompted scientists to carefully consider this substance’s characteristics. The pharmacological characteristics of chrysophanol, which include anticancer, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, and antimicrobial activities, have been extensively documented in the literature. Chrysophanol’s pharmacokinetics and toxicity studies, however, call for more research before it can be used as a drug. This is the first in-depth analysis of chrysophanol’s natural sources, biosynthetic processes, and pharmacology. Here, we reviewed recent developments in chrysophanol pharmacokinetics. We have also drawn attention to the knowledge gaps regarding its mode of disease prevention and toxicity.
